  Oil changes every 10k or 15k – what's everyone actually doing? (66 อ่าน)

I've been going back and forth on this for a while now. My 2018 BMW 520i has the manufacturer recommended service interval of 15,000 km or once a year, but I keep hearing from enthusiasts that you should never go that long especially in this climate with all the stop and go driving. Then I read forums where people say modern synthetic oils are fine for 15k if you're using good quality stuff. I'm not tracking the car or anything, just daily driving to work and occasional highway trips to Dubai. I've been looking into an advanced engine care service that includes a full inspection rather than just dumping oil and changing a filter because I want someone to actually tell me if the engine is showing signs of sludge or wear between intervals. For those of you with similar European cars, are you sticking to the dealer's 15k schedule or doing 10k just for peace of mind? And have you actually seen any long term difference? Would love to hear from someone who's kept a car past 200k km on either schedule.

10,000 km intervals in the UAE rather than 15,000 is the practical choice for daily stop and go driving in this heat. The manufacturer interval is designed for European conditions with longer highway runs and lower ambient temperatures, neither of which applies to Abu Dhabi commuting.

Quality full synthetic oil with the correct BMW LL-01 specification handles 15k intervals fine in theory, but short trip stop and go driving degrades oil faster than the interval calculator accounts for because the engine never fully reaches operating temperature consistently.

Kept a 520i past 220k km on 10k synthetic oil changes and the engine was clean on inspection with no sludge deposits. The extra cost of two additional oil changes per year is negligible compared to the peace of mind and the engine condition at high mileage.

A full inspection rather than just an oil swap is exactly the right approach for catching developing issues between major services. Oil condition, filter debris, and a quick visual on hoses and belts during each change takes an extra few minutes but catches things that would otherwise only surface at the wrong moment.

The CBS system calculating longer intervals based on driving style and conditions is genuinely sophisticated but it does not account for the specific heat stress of UAE summers on oil viscosity. Overriding it slightly conservatively at 10k is a reasonable decision that most experienced European car owners here eventually settle on.
