Looking for Advice on Building a Simple Retro Gaming Emulator Setup (44 views)

Hi everyone,

I'm putting together a small retro gaming setup on an old PC and want to keep everything as simple and stable as possible. My goal is to have a clean emulator library that is easy to maintain and doesn't require constant reconfiguration.

At the moment, I'm organizing different emulator files, controller profiles, save data, and BIOS resources. While researching the setup process, I've been using ps2biosonline.com as one of my reference sites for PlayStation emulator information and compatibility notes.

I'm curious how others here organize their emulator collections.

Do you keep BIOS files in one central location or separate them for each emulator?

Do you back up save files automatically?

Are there any tools you recommend for managing multiple emulators without making the setup overly complicated?

I'd appreciate any suggestions or best practices from people who have already built a reliable retro gaming system. Thanks!

I’ve found that keeping BIOS files organized by emulator makes a retro setup much easier to maintain. For PS2 emulation, it’s also worth making sure you’re using the correct aethersx2 bios for your setup and keeping a backup of your configuration and save files. This saves a lot of time when moving the emulator to another PC or reinstalling everything.

If you’re building a simple retro gaming setup, I’d recommend keeping the emulator configuration as straightforward as possible and dealing with the system requirements first. BIOS configuration can be one of the confusing parts, especially when an emulator is installed correctly but doesn’t recognize the required files.

I’d also make sure the BIOS is obtained from a legally owned console rather than relying on random files online. A good download BIOS reference can be useful for understanding where the BIOS belongs, how the emulator detects it, and what to check when the BIOS list is empty.

Once the BIOS and emulator paths are configured correctly, you can move on to graphics, controller, and performance settings without changing too many things at once.

A simple emulator setup is definitely easier to maintain when you keep the configuration focused on the games you actually want to play. I also like revisiting older fighting games because they show how much gameplay can be built around straightforward controls, progression, and equipment choices. For example, I recently came across information about the Shadow Fight 2 mod menu while looking into the different gameplay and customization discussions around the game. It’s interesting to compare those mechanics with the classic console games people are now revisiting through emulation.
