Box kicks and territory (25 views)

12 Oct 2026 23:11

Rugby question I never used to understand why a scrum-half would kick a box kick rather than keep the ball in hand. I watched a team do it twice in quick succession near its own half. What's the tactical logic? What makes a box kick tactically useful in rugby when a team is under pressure near its own half?

A good box kick gives the chase time to contest the catch and can move the battle into safer territory. The height and hang time matter as much as the distance. If the chasers aren't organised, though, the opposition gets free possession. I watch whether the kicker's teammates are already moving into their lanes before the ball leaves the boot. I also happened to see horse race betting online on a sports site, though that page isn't a source for this particular match analysis.
